Central Park, Peterborough - an appreciationWritten by Toby Wood who describes the booklet as an appreciation of, and introduction to, Central Park Peterborough, a place that Toby and his family have used and enjoyed over five generations. There are many documents about the Park that have been written over the years, particularly by local historians such as Stephen Perry. If you have not visited before, we hope this book will encourage you to visit and enjoy Central Park and see it change through the seasons, or if you are a regular visitor, encourage you to find more about the park. This is a must read and very comprehensive booklet to help get the most, and fully appreciate all that can be found in Central Park. The book is priced at £5.00. Photographs of my cityThe book has been produced by Toby Wood, vice chair of the Society. It is a fascinating collection of all his own photographs covering a wide diversity of subjects, samples below to whet your appetite. Profits from it go to the charity "Helping Our Ukrainian Friends". Toby describes his book as follows:- "This book not about Peterborough, it is about my Peterborough, from the magnificence of the Cathedral’s west front to a butterfly in our garden on the edge of Dogsthorpe. This book is a personal celebration of my home city, Peterborough, the place where I was born, brought up, in which I worked and retired. It is a collection of favourite snaps, the majority of which have been taken with various versions of iPhones as I have walked round the city over the past ten years or so. In the book I am trying to demonstrate that most people can take pictures of everyday things in their locality. Think of these photos as cheese and onion crisps, all from the same packet but with each one a different shape yet with a similar taste. I want to show you my Peterborough – the good, the memorable, the mundane, the quirky and the random. Consequently this is not a guide book or a glossy publication designed to show off every aspect of the city at its best. It is a book intended to encourage those people living in or visiting Peterborough to look around and take just a little more notice." The book is priced at £10.00. The Romans in the Nene ValleyWhat did the Romans ever do for Peterborough? Well, they didn’t found our city, but they have left us an impressive range of features and artefacts which have been uncovered and studied over the past two hundred years. The Nene Valley Archaeological Trust have kindly agreed that we can sell on their behalf copies of their recently published book, The Romans in the Nene Valley”, by Dr. Stephen Upex. With many illustrations, this book provides an overview of the development of the lower Nene valley from the late Iron Age to the very end of Roman rule. The Roman military presence is covered along with details of forts, villas, farmsteads, religions, and burials, and also the important Roman town of Durobrivae (near Water Newton) with its sprawling suburbs. Dr. Upex has excavated, written about and researched the area for over forty years and brings together an insightful account of the Nene Valley and its Roman past. The book is priced at £15.00. Edmund Tyrell Artis & the Durobrivae of AntoninusThis is a facsimile of the famous set of plates published in 1823 by pioneer archaeologist Edmund Artis to illustrate his extensive excavations in and around Castor, together with an introduction by Dr Stephen Upex covering both Artis and the plates. The illustrations are reproduced in colour on high quality paper, with many pages opening out to twice A4 size. Originally issued to subscribers in instalments over a period of 5 years, the surviving copies are often incomplete, of variable quality, and hard to find. This complete compilation marking their 200th anniversary makes them accessible to all. With the late Geoff Dannell, Stephen Upex has spent decades piecing together the life and works of ET Artis. His research interests spanned many topics and he left his mark on both palaeontology and archaeology. The Durobrivae provides an illustrated account of his excavations and finds in the Nene Valley in and around Castor, near Peterborough. The book is priced at £30.00. Thirsty WorkIn the 1970s and ‘80s Victorian rubbish dumps were dug by avid collectors in search of soft drinks bottles and flagons. One such local collector was the late Greg Prior. This 236-page hardback book is the work of Greg and his wife historian Avril Lumley Prior. Together they have drawn on his collection to produce a fascinating and thoroughly researched history of the 39 soft drinks manufacturers that quenched the Peterborian thirst between 1846 and recent times. Book signed by the author. The book is priced at £19.95. Order online (below) or print off and use our order form. |
The Stamford CanalOne of England’s earliest canals, the Stamford Canal was first authorised under Elizabeth I in 1571 yet wasn’t completed until 1670. The purpose of the Canal was to facilitate the transport of goods such as barley and coal from the limit of navigation on the River Welland at Deeping St James up to the important town of Stamford. For its time, it was a remarkable and ambitious project, requiring the construction of twelve locks. The Canal proved successful for close to two hundred years but was dealt a fatal blow by the arrival of the Midland Railway in Stamford in 1848, succumbing to this new competition after only fifteen years. This book, edited by the late Keith Simpson, is published by Deepings Heritage who have kindly made copies available to us. As well as describing the story of the canal, it includes details of the features that survive in the present day landscape, together with a detailed map. The book is priced at £9.00.
