Peterborough Civic Society is a registered charity (no. 279306) which plays an important part in preserving and enhancing the city’s heritage and monitoring the quality of new development. We are completely independent and rely on the support of our individual and corporate members.

Donations also form a very important part of our fundraising and are very much appreciated, helping us to pay for projects and campaigns.

Join us as a volunteer and help make Peterborough a better place. Volunteering with us is an excellent way to learn more about Peterborough, while contributing to our work in a friendly and co-operative spirit.

We look for our volunteers to become members of the Society, so gaining access to the full range of our activities, but if you would like to discuss the available opportunities before making a decision to join, you are welcome do so without any obligation.

Currently, we need help to fulfil the following roles:

Sales and marketing

As a Society we have published DVDs, a book and pamphlets, cards and other items. We would like someone with some sales or marketing flair or experience to help us in this area. Currently, for instance, we need to complete the sale of our stock of Peterborough in Detail greeting cards. There are 4,000 cards to sell, which should generate funds of £4,000 for the maintenance of Peterborough Cathedral. (Sales administration and income collection need not be included in your remit as our Treasurer can handle these.)

We also need help to recruit individual/family members, to complement the large increase we have recently achieved in the number of our corporate members.

For further details please contact: Roger Davis, 01733 235484,

Our two Plans Groups meet every month to consider and comment on significant planning applications. We know from experience that our comments carry weight with the City Council and contribute towards the achievement of better planning outcomes. We would welcome one or more extra members to serve on these groups.

If you have some experience of planning or architecture, we would love to hear from you. If you would like to give this a try but are concerned that you may not have sufficient knowledge of the planning system, don’t worry as we will help you learn on the job!

Organising events

Our annual programme of events includes monthly meetings (with a special keynote meeting) and summer visits to places of interest to our members, plus participation in external events such as the annual Heritage Open Days and the Peterborough Heritage Festival. We also wish to arrange additional events in the future, for example, aimed at meeting the needs of our corporate members.

If you feel that you would enjoy organising these activities (or assisting with them), please let us know.

For further details please contact: Peter Lee, 01780 782703

Our Society is successful and expanding. Peterborough people are becoming increasingly interested in what we do and what we campaign for. In particular our monthly meetings have been extremely well-attended, and we have taken the lead in arranging the annual Heritage Open Days.

Consequently we are looking for additional help to publicise and promote what we do. If you have some experience (and a bit of time) to help us with promoting the Society we would love to hear from you. We want to spread our message more widely and we need an outgoing person to liaise with local magazines and publications. In particular, the completion in 2020 of the next phase of our Blue Plaques programme should give many opportunities for generating publicity and portraying the Society in a positive light.

For further details please contact: Toby Wood, 01733 732784

Would I need to join the PCS committee?

Ideally yes, but not necessarily? The extent of your involvement with other aspects of the work of the Society would depend on what you are comfortable with.

Thank you
